Millions of years of evolution has led to wool. It keeps sheep warm in winter and cool in summer.
It’s light enough for animal activity, yet it deals with extreme weather conditions and even odour because it is excellent at managing moisture. It’s literally a lifesaver and a genuine performance fibre.
The full benefits of wool have never been fully captured to enhance human performance.
Traditional spinning twists the life out of wool by compressing natural air pockets, introducing tension, creating loops and restricting the natural movement of the fibres — essentially creating a rope-like structure that can be itchy next to the skin.
Nuyarn® can make wool that performs as closely as possible to the way it does in nature.
It unleashes wool's natural abilities in moisture management and thermoregulation to rival or exceed even modern synthetic alternatives.
Nuyarn® does not twist the fibres. Instead it drafts wool fibres along a high performance filament resulting in two ply yarns with much more volume and aeration.
It is not ring spun. It is not core spun.

MORE VOLUME AND AERATION
Twist-free spinning creates much more loft and aeration within the wool fibres. In nature, this results in natural thermoregulation, breathability, air resistance and the ability to absorb and manage water vapour.

The following performance claims are based on independent tests carried out by Intertek® Vietnam and AgResearch, New Zealand, when equivalent amounts of Nuyarn® (right) is compared to conventional ring spun 100% merino (left).

FASTER DRYING
Nuyarn® Merino has the ability to absorb moisture from vapour stage, one tier before synthetic materials. Vapour and perspiration are quickly wicked away from the surface of the skin and absorb into the fabric. The increased aeration in the structure of Nuyarn® Merino begins the drying process even before it arrives at the fabric surface.
The Result
The next-to-skin environment is drier even under extreme performance, helping the body thermoregulate more efficiently, leaving more energy to focus on performance.

MORE ELASTICITY
Ordinary spinning technology compresses wool fibres together, so manufacturers add elastane/spandex, for elasticity. This adds weight, but it also degrades over time and has little capacity to deal with moisture. The Nuyarn® twist-free technology results in fibres that can move with the body resulting in incredible stretch that returns to 100% of its original shape.

Nuyarn® provides exceptional pressure comfort that lasts for the life of the garment without the need for synthetic materials.

MORE THERMAL RETENTION
The increased volume and natural air pockets that are in the structure of the fibres, act as an effective thermal insulator. The increased loft and thermoregulation lead to lighter weight garments that perform better than heavier traditionally spun merino.

MORE AIR RESISTANT
Nuyarn® retains the natural air pockets within the fibre structure that is normally twisted out by traditional spinning technology. This additional loft and aeration provides a natural barrier to wind. This increased air resistance does not inhibit breathability as moisture is mechanically moved from vapour stage.

GREATER BURST STRENGTH
Nuyarn® twist-free technology can use longer fibres without creating tension. This lack of tension alongside the increased elasticity in the fibre structure leads to less opportunities for breakage. Compared to traditionally spun merino, Nuyarn® Merino delivers 50% increased tensile strength, resulting in a more consistent appearance, less pilling and fewer holes in acres of impact or abrasion.

Apparel created with Nuyarn® Merino has an increased defence against unexpected punctures or abrasion.

MORE DURABLE
The structure of Nuyarn® Merino is much more durable compared to traditional spinning technology. In the industry standard Martindale abrasion test, Nuyarn® Merino lasted to 123,333 rubs before the first sign of breakdown. Whereas traditionally spun merino lasts around 14,000-18,000 rubs before a hole appeared.
The Result
Nuyarn® Merino is 8.8x more durable than traditionally spun merino. One Nuyarn® Merino garment will last as long as nine traditionally spun merino garments.

STRONGER SEAMS
Nuyarn® Merino seams withstood up to 8kg compared to 3kg in traditionally spun merino. In all cases, Nuyarn® Merino seams were stronger in both course and wale direction.
The Result
Garments created with Nuyarn® Merino are less likely to suffer a tear or rip at the seams when met with abrasion.
A lifetime of benefit
Nuyarn® benefits do not wash out. It is a mechanical technique, not a chemical process and so performance attributes are there for the life of the garment.
Twist-free spinning does not introduce tension into the fibres and therefore there is no spirality. Garments retain their shape even after multiple launderings.
